Business credit report dates: report age vs financial year

Distinguish the report date, accounting period, filing date, and source-check date using a timeline you can apply to a company research file.

By International Credit Reports

A new report can contain several information dates

The date a report is issued is not necessarily the date of every fact inside it. Financial accounts describe an accounting period, filings have submission dates, and individual sources may have their own check or update dates. Keep those dates separate when assessing how current the information is for your decision.

Start by listing the dates actually supplied. If a source-check date is not given, mark it as unspecified rather than treating the report date as a substitute. A newly compiled report can still contain the latest obtainable accounts from an earlier financial year.

Worked timeline: four dates with different meanings

The following dates are hypothetical. They illustrate why a report delivered today may contain useful historical information without providing a current cash position or a continuously updated view of the company.

Illustrative company information timeline
DateEventWhat it tells you
31 December 2024Financial year endsPeriod end for the financial statements
30 September 2025Accounts are filedWhen this document entered the stated filing record
10 September 2026A registry record is checkedDate of that identity or status lookup, if documented
14 September 2026Report is issuedDate the report itself is supplied or compiled as stated

Choose the date relevant to your question

For historical financial performance, read the accounting period and any comparatives. For a company name change, inspect the dated identity evidence. For a payment experience, look for the period or date attached to that experience. Different questions may need different follow-ups even within one report.

  • Does the report identify the financial year and currency of each figure?
  • Does a recent source check concern identity only, or also the information you need?
  • Did a material transaction, ownership change, or proposed order occur after the available evidence?
  • Is a missing date a limitation that should be clarified before relying on the item?

Specify the required period before ordering

If your review requires accounts for a particular year or evidence after a known event, state that requirement before purchase. Ask what information is obtainable for the company and what the selected report type does. A report delivery estimate describes when the report is expected, not a guarantee that every underlying source will be newly created.

Record the decision date and the information periods used in your approval note. This lets a later reviewer see what was known at the time and decide whether the file needs another check. Avoid inventing a universal expiry period: review timing should reflect your organization’s policy, the transaction, and changes in the business relationship.
